Osteoarthritis, sometimes vulgarized as “wear and tear” arthritis, is a condition that involves the degeneration of both articular cartilage and subchondral bone. Left untreated, the diseased joint will suffer from fissure and partial erosion, cartilage fibrillation, complete loss of articular cartilage and ultimately exposed bone and sclerosis of the subchondral bone.
Cartilage lacks blood supply, hindering its ability to repair itself. Although there are many medications used to treat osteoarthritis, most of them are for symptom control and pain management; none of them are curative.
