Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) occurs when any acute or chronic dysfunction in either the heart or kidneys leads to a dysfunction in the other organ. In other words, it is a pathophysiological confluence of the cardiovascular and renal system, where for instance, kidneys fail to respond to a failing heart. The mortality rate of patients suffering from CRS depends on its subtype (types 1,2,3,4 and 5) as well as its comorbidities.
As mentioned earlier, cardiorenal syndrome has multiple subtypes. Being the result of a defective interplay between two failing organ systems, creating a preclinical model accurate enough posed a great challenge to all scientists alike.
