Tumor, rubor, calor, and dolor. These terms were coined by the Roman encyclopedist Celsus in the 1st century A.D to describe the four classical signs of inflammation. 20 centuries later, we are still trying to better understand how inflammation works, but more importantly, how the inflammatory process goes awry, and how to stop it from doing so.
