Visceral pain is one of the more poorly understood forms of pain. Although costly on the healthcare system as a whole, very little research has been made on its pathophysiological mechanisms. Studies estimate that between a quarter and half of the worldwide population has experienced visceral pain at least once in their lifetime. A more thorough approach on the different etiologies of these types of pain could segue to developing new treatment methods.
