In vitro tests in NHPs offer a clear advantage when compared to in vitro tests in other animal models: their close physiologic and anatomic resemblance to humans allow them to be used in studies requiring high degrees of homology. For instance, the toxicity of monoclonal antibodies is mainly driven by their pharmacological activity, hence prior safety studies before clinical testing needs to be done in species in which the mAb binds and interacts with targets to a similar extent to that anticipated in humans.
