Pain can be looked at as an international language. We’ve all felt pain at one point or another, and we can all tell when someone else is in pain even if they don’t explicitly say so. Scientists around the world have tried for decades to objectively quantify pain, and while most pain scales are self-reported by patients, on a scale from 1 to 10 for example, we still lack the means to numerically measure it. Some healthcare professionals use different acronyms to subjectively assess a patient’s pain, for example, SOCRATES, which stands for Site, Onset, Character, Radiation, Associations, Time course, Exacerbating/relieving factors and Severity.

The literature has pain divided into 4 types, nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic and functional pain (also known as “other” pain).
