Pain, officially conceptualizing it as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling the associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.” It represents a wide variety of sensations such as uncomfortable, unpleasant, irritating, disturbing, distressing, intolerable or disabling, which appear in everyone’s lifetime. Besides physiological pain elicited by mechanical, thermal or chemical stimuli, pathological pain is affecting one-sixth of the global population, and arises as a consequence either inflammatory response or damage to the nervous system. Despite the holistic advancement in pain assessment and treatment, the quantification of painful sensation is largely subjective.
